Tamar Shindel is a licensed professional and National Certified Counselor, Somatic Experiencing Practictioner (SEP), andTrust Based Relational Interventions (TBRI) Practitioner . She recieved her Masters of Counseling from Ottawa University. Tamar works across the age span with children as young as 3 years old through late adulthood. The majority of her counseling career has been focused on helping individuals and families heal from trauma, developmental trauma, sexual abuse, family of origin issues, and anxiety.
Tamar has a passion for working collaboratively with her clients and identifying existing strengths. She specializes in supporting clients in healing from trauma and the impact of chronic stress. Tamar works with the whole system that includes the mind (thoughts and cognitions), emotions, body, and spirit (connection to God or something bigger than one’s self) to achieve the greatest sense of wholeness for the individual or family. Tamar is a Somatic Experiencing practitioner and Touch Skills trained therapist, a modality that helps the body release and heal from traumatic experiences and life stressors. She utilizes the expressive art therapies with clients to facilitate insight, process emotions, and develop new perspectives.
When working with children, Tamar utilizes play therapy and filial play therapy (teaching parents how to engage in therapeutic play) to improve and strengthen parent-child relationships. Child and family therapy sessions are fun and experiential in nature. Tamar is also a Trust Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) practitioner. TBRI offers practical tools for parents and caregivers who care for children from “hard places” such as abuse, neglect, and/or trauma. TBRI supports parents and caregivers to see the "whole child" and help the child reach his/her highest potential. The TBRI skills are highly effective with families that care for children who have been fostered and/or adopted.
